Description This insect will give dragons a run for their money, in hoarding gold.

The Barterfly (Musca cauponarius) is a monster with an abiding thirst for gold. In the absence of gold, trade for items of higher value might be able to distract it.

History

The very first Barterfly drove a dragon out of its hoard in the misty vastness of the depths of time. This unassuming insect discovered that the pile of gold that the dragon has slept upon was, in fact, of vastly greater value than the pile of dung in the dragon's backed up privy, and this realization was enough to trigger a cascade of neural connections. Most of the connections simply served to expand the fly's consciousness, but then there was the connection that went wrong: a connection between neurons responsible for rank evaluation and the neurons available for reward feedback.

Barter became a way of life for the Barterfly. Heroines became natural enemies, because not only do they carry what the Barterfly wants, but they are constitutionally incapable of trading with anything they consider a monster.
