First Chronicle : Awakening

Chapter 1: Without a Name

!Chapter 1: Without a Name
NPC: Non-Playable Character.

In the world of Godville receiving a name is a blessing of Gods. Thus, nameless NPCs are legion. Mostly ignored by the so-called heroes, those NPCs are yet the ones who produce the beer, build the taverns and the very roads heroes walks on, among many things. Without a name, those NPCs live a monotonous, eventless life. However, the whims of Gods and their champions sometimes disrupt that monotony, creating changes Gods themselves could not have expected.

Inside a tavern, a waitress lived one of those monotonous and eventless lives. The girl was in her early twenties and average in look, height and build. She had fair skin, short dark hair and brown eyes, and was wearing a cliché waitress outfit. Serving beers and cleaning the tavern all the week, the young woman was earning just enough money to feed her needy family despite her countless hours of works. Without a name, the waitress was doing her job because she needed to, bored of her eventless life, until that fateful day…

The tavern was crowded, the day young, the laughs hearty, the piano’s music joyous, and the beer flowed. Yet, it was a day like another for the miserable waitress. The girl had not a second to catch her breath and slalomed between tables to serves the countless customers.

However, alcohol helping, some guards started a brawl in the tavern right when the girl was serving the next table. Trying to calm down the people, the young woman was caught up in the fight and suddenly, a fist was coming right to her face.

A chair flew and knocked out cold the guard before the hit landed, the chair and the drunkard doing quite the chaotic symphony in the process. Took by surprise, the scared young woman fell backwards then quickly hid under a nearby table while the guards rushed to their mate only to notice its unconsciousness. Then, silence settled, especially as the pianist had already sneakily left the tavern.

“So uncivilized.” commented a calm yet irritated voice. All the eyes turned to the other side of the tavern, to a hero. Yes, they were probably one if we consider their weird yet armoured attire, who was glaring back at the drunkards with a scornful look.

“You really think you can get away with this, hero in not-so-shining armour?” asked an intoxicated guard with a grin, “We’re three and you’re alone. You’re going to regret it.” The other guards cracked their knuckles to accentuate the threat as they were approaching the hero while the other customers started to get out of the way, some trying to grab a good seat for the upcoming brawl.

“Make me.” calmly answered the divine champion. The guards tried to approach them as one, but the proximity of tables and chairs forced them to spread. The first guard who got ahead of his mates charged the impudent hero with all his might. Sadly, its might could not compete against a good old trip, and the guard crashed right into the wall behind. The closer of the two remaining guard exchanged blows with her foe, until their stances froze, the palm of the hero over the guard’s fist.

“Paper beats rock.” Despite her protestation, the hero threw over the guard who landed on the first guard who was trying to get up. The last guard tried launching an emptied pint at that sassy one, but the champion casually dodged it. Caught in the momentum of his throw, the guard could not avoid a kick powerful enough to propel him on a table, which instantly broke because of the impact. Meanwhile, the first guard, who was again trying to get up, received the pint right on the head, knocking him for good.

And so, silence settled again. Totally ignoring the guards’ groans of pain, the fighter went right to the still frightened waitress hiding under a table.

“Are you fine, milady?” they asked, reaching out their hand.
“Eh?” was the only answer the girl could came up with, her eyes like saucers.

The waitress looked at the held out hand, then back at the hero’s eyes, unsure what to do. The fighter smiled at the young woman looking at her in awe. Then, as she was grabbing their hand and standing up, a genuine timid smile appeared on the young woman’ lips and her eyes, for the first time since long, sparkled with life. Then the champion turned to the innkeeper who had hiding this entire time the whole time: “Sorry for the mess.” as they threw a bag of gold coins on the counter and left the speechless tavern.

Finally getting back to her senses and realizing she had not thanked her saviour, the waitress rushed out of the tavern: “Wait, her….”, but they were already gone, their footprints vanishing abruptly right after few steps. However, the girl noticed something: a strange envelope with Godville’s seal on it. Pushed by curiosity, she grabbed it and the world spun around her.

Losing her balance, she felt on her rear but then noticed that she was no longer in front of the tavern but in the middle of a weird circular room. Said room was three-quarters covered by bookshelves and by a large number of mirrors on the remaining quarter. No, they were not mirrors. They were not reflecting the room. Instead, each of those “mirrors” was focusing on a different setting and a different person, both man and women, each looking very differently to each other’s, some of their attires looking weird to the girl eyes.

In front of those mirrors, a chair suddenly rotated, letting appear a man with long black hair and hazel eyes showing both curiosity and boredom. The man and the young woman stared at each other for what felt like an eternity.

Then, with her voice faltering, she asked:

“Are you… a God?”

Thus, the scripted life of a young woman without a name was about to change.
