Miss Perspicacia Tick is a witch and a "witch finder". She is from the lowlands but travels the regions which are hostile to witches looking for girls who have the potential to become witches. One of the young girls with witch potential that Miss Tick discovered is her heroine, the Queen of Lancre, Magrat Garlick.

Miss Tick makes her living as a teacher, a role which has given her the habit of correcting spelling, grammar and punctuation. This has naturally led to her being a GodWiki editor.

She also earns her money by doing bits of medicine and misfortune-telling. Miss Tick does not look like an ordinary witch because looking like a witch can be dangerous when walking among the uneducated. She does not wear magic jewellery or carry a magic broom. Since she often finds herself in areas where witches are unwelcome, she has a spring-operated ‘stealth’ hat that only grows a point when she wants it to. The hat spring tends to stick because it gets rusty due to her being ducked in ponds so often.

Fortunately, Miss Tick has a medal in swimming from the Quirm College for Young Ladies, and a book on escapology which she studies frequently, practicing untying different kinds of knots. This allows her to escape the dunkings by freeing herself and swimming for a long way underwater.

Miss Tick travels in the company of a toad who used to be a lawyer. He was turned into his present form by a wizard on the premise that all lawyers are toads anyway. The toad usually rides on the brim of Miss Tick’s hat and makes pithy comments about people and events they come across in their travels.

Perspicacia Tick’s best known saying is:

"If you trust in yourself.... and believe in your dreams.... and follow your star... you'll still get beaten by people who spent their time working hard and learning things and weren't so lazy."
