Why does this template use guillemets?

This wiki is in English, not French or Russian. Therefore, it should use English quotation marks, not guillemets. —Uni34 (talk) 10:00, 30 December 2019 (UTC)

Well, I can answer the 'why'. Forgive me if I'm telling you things you know along the way.
Godville is, of course, made by a small team of Russian programmers, and was originally developed and released in Russian for a few years before its subsequent release in English. It always had, and still does, a far larger and more active player base in the Russian-language version than in the English language version, due in part to its early promotion on a very popular Russian-language programming website (think Medium in Russian). The Devs recruited a selection of their bilingual English-Russian players to help with the first translations of the game, and then announced the English-language launch to their Russian players, inviting them to spread the word with their English-speaking friends.
As a result, in the early days of Godville, almost the entire player base was in fact Russian-speaking. This obviously included many of the early Godwiki contributors, who began with gusto on the Godwiki project. It was one of those early Russian-speaking players who imported this template directly from ru.wikipedia/Шаблон:Цитата, the Russian wikipedia Quote template. This template's remained almost completely unchanged since then, because there's been very little reason to change it. And that's Why.
Now, I think what you're really asking is "Should we change this template to use English-style quotation marks instead of guillemots?" That's another question entirely.
I've been thinking about that a lot myself, actually, which is why I've been working for a few weeks on a complete replacement for Template:Quote at User:Djonni/Sandbox which will be more mobile-friendly, configurable, and use more modern HTML5 structures instead of outputting a table. Instead of making the decision to change 150-odd pages, many of which are user pages, the solution I thought better was to offer a parameter that allowed people to switch between guillemots and quotation marks (this is why I uploaded the quotation mark images you found and used in this revision, of course). And, since I was going that far, I've been building a handful of other formatting and typesetting options into it as well.
You're welcome to take a look and give it a test, and I'm open to feedback on it. It's probably close to ready for release now.
Now, I'm definitely not opposed in principle to changing the default from guillemots to quotation marks. But I am opposed to doing that without notice and broad agreement from everyone. That said, I honestly don't think it's necessary nor important to change to quotation marks — guillemots serve perfectly well as graphical bookends for a block quote, and since the primary function of {{Quote}} is simply to visually set apart a block quote from the rest of the text, guillemots are just as good as any other graphical detail, and arguably better than English-style quotation marks, as the sheer dizzying variety of quotation mark usage globally is staggering, and guillemot usage and formatting is much more consistent in places where they are used.
So, in short: Notey.png Feedback required and pretty wide consensus would be needed before changing the default for the entire Godwiki away from guillemots, but I'm totally in agreement that it'd be good to also have quotation marks available as an option. -- Djonni (talk) 10:37, 30 December 2019 (UTC)
Does it helps if I say I don't care if it's guillemets or quotation marks for the default, as long both are available with the parameters? 😇 --WardPhoenix (talk) 12:24, 30 December 2019 (UTC)
