::::: Yeah, yesterday I started a survey of the pages that use the Hero template to see if anything or anyone would be too broken. There are actually more users for whom fixing the bug will fix their page, and none yet that it will actually cause a problem. For example, with [[Bella Rebe]], fixing the bug will cause the link to lead to the User: page, which is correctly redirected, so will cause no issue at all.

Luckily, because this is a template that's mostly used in the main namespace, it's a simple matter for me to fix the affected users in every case I've encountered so far. Most of the users of the Hero template are long inactive, so they're unlikely to notice or react, so I'll do the edits myself. We have precedent for this when fixing template issues. -- [[User:Djonni|Djonni]] ([[User talk:Djonni|talk]]) 04:32, 11 October 2019 (UTC)

{{outdent|:::::}} So, you can all see that I'm writing my way through the list of pages with the Hero template. I'm not done, but here are my observations.

* Fixing the bug will fix a ''lot'' of pages that use the Hero template. ''Way, way more'' than would be broken by the change.
 +
* The Hero template is rarely used today. I think it's because the template is ugly and buggy. Most pages where the template has been used are years old.
 +
* The problem with the template pointing to the wrong destination for God pages has obviously caused people a lot of frustration and confusion over the years, with lots of weird "solutions", or people giving up on getting it to work, because they assumed they were doing something wrong.

I think we all know that the Hero, Usergod and Guild templates need a complete rebuild, taking advantage of the beautiful {{tl|Infobox}} metatemplate. Fixing the bug, and making the links point to <code><nowiki>[[User:{{{god}}}]]</nowiki></code> is an important fix, but it's really just a band-aid over the real issue of rebuilding these templates to be user friendlier, less horrible, and more intelligent.

I can't promise that I'll have rebuilds of all three ready for JanuWiki, but I'm going to start. Have already, in fact, started on a draft replacement for the Usergod template at [[User:Djonni/Template sandbox]]. Comments, suggestions, and testing welcome there. I actually started that project long ago, a long time before we had {{tl|Infobox}}, and [[User talk:Djonni/Template sandbox]] already has some of my early thinking laid out there. -- [[User:Djonni|Djonni]] ([[User talk:Djonni|talk]]) 11:22, 12 October 2019 (UTC)

Hero template.

There's nowhere in the hero template to add in a pet's personality. AurynCatherineVincent (talk) 06:22, 25 March 2018 (UTC)

You could do it just like the game itself does, and add it to their name, e.g. |petname = Chewy "Tenacious" -- FeRDNYC (talk) 19:46, 19 May 2018 (UTC)
I added pet personality. --BlueStapler (talk) 23:21, 4 June 2018 (UTC)

User and God name issue

I know the template is an old one, but I noticed an issue (probably as old as the template) with the linking with Snowy Leopard, the hero of User:Jaguar of Awesome. As you can see, despite the user page being created, the hero page doesn't link to it (Which could lead to create a redirect page with the name of the God, like I did with my own heroine template]]. Since I don't want to mess up the template I prefer to have a talk about it before doing change that will link the hero page to the user page. Thoughts? --WardPhoenix (talk) 12:03, 10 October 2019 (UTC)

Changing the template might ruin other's settings. Though if it's just adding some function then it would be best. Something like the one on Niyan Muezzin should be good, but please do try to remove the resulting '[' and ']'. --Cusack (talk) 12:48, 10 October 2019 (UTC)
Oh I see the issue you mean WardPhoenix, the template doesn't correctly add User: to the god name. Definitely fixable, but as Cusack points out, we'll need to check which users of the template have manually worked around it.
Cusack, I'm not sure if you actually intend the Champion of the God: field to actually have the [[...]] around your name? 🤔 If you intended to see:
Champion of the God: Cusack
then set this: |god=User:Cusack{{!}}Cusack instead of what you currently have. And what WardPhoenix has pointed out is that we should fix the bug, so that you simply put |god=Cusack for it to appear correctly. -- Djonni (talk) 14:39, 10 October 2019 (UTC)
I just realised I goofed badly explaining what to set in |god=. I've corrected it above now. Sorry if that was, eh, confusing... -- Djonni (talk) 14:57, 10 October 2019 (UTC)
I see. But there are some users who didn't use the User: thingy and proceeded to create another page. Thus, I think we shouldn't try to directly link it to a User page. This |god=User:Cusack{{!}}Cusack should do the trick, but it would be best if people are informed about this convenient thingy in the Guidelines. An example of an entry that doesn't use the user page is from Bella Rebe --Cusack (talk) 22:18, 10 October 2019 (UTC)
Yeah, yesterday I started a survey of the pages that use the Hero template to see if anything or anyone would be too broken. There are actually more users for whom fixing the bug will fix their page, and none yet that it will actually cause a problem. For example, with Bella Rebe, fixing the bug will cause the link to lead to the User: page, which is correctly redirected, so will cause no issue at all.
However, as we always do with a change to a major template, we'll post a topic on Talk:Main Page. Luckily, because this is a template that's mostly used in the main namespace, it's a simple matter for me to fix the affected users in every case I've encountered so far. ──────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────── So, you can all see that I'm writing my way through the list of pages with the Hero template. I'm not done, but here are my observations.

  • Fixing the bug will fix a lot of pages that use the Hero template. Way, way more than would be broken by the change.
  • The Hero template is rarely used today. I think it's because the template is ugly and buggy. Most pages where the template has been used are years old.
  • The problem with the template pointing to the wrong destination for God pages has obviously caused people a lot of frustration and confusion over the years, with lots of weird "solutions", or people giving up on getting it to work, because they assumed they were doing something wrong.

I think we all know that the Hero, Usergod and Guild templates need a complete rebuild, taking advantage of the beautiful {{Infobox}} metatemplate. Fixing the bug, and making the links point to [[User:{{{god}}}]] is an important fix, but it's really just a band-aid over the real issue of rebuilding these templates to be user friendlier, less horrible, and more intelligent.

I can't promise that I'll have rebuilds of all three ready for JanuWiki, but I'm going to start. Have already, in fact, started on a draft replacement for the Usergod template at User:Djonni/Template sandbox. Comments, suggestions, and testing welcome there. I actually started that project long ago, a long time before we had {{Infobox}}, and User talk:Djonni/Template sandbox already has some of my early thinking laid out there. -- Djonni (talk) 11:22, 12 October 2019 (UTC)
