Apparently, mere mortals have pets that die at around level 9 to 11. Having a level 44 hero who has gone through at least 6 pets who have done exactly that, one has to wonder if there's a secret to keeping pets alive.  If there is, Google doesn't know it.

Some heroes have a natural talent for taming pets. They can make it so that their brutes will never die or run away, and if it does, it will be found. These brutes reach huge levels, which is what places the hero on the pantheon.

To qualify, the hero needs to have a high-level pet: The higher, the better. The pet will need to be alive and tamed by the hero.
