Talk pages

There are two types of talk pages on the wiki. There are personal talk pages for each user, and there are talk pages for each article page on the wiki. A talk page is simply a place to leave comments and have a discussion.

Personal talk pages

To find someone’s user talk page on the wiki you can look in one of two places. If you are already on their user page, the talk page can be accessed by clicking the Discussion tab that is on the top left of the page. It is next to the tab that says User Page. The second way to access someone’s talk page is from another talk page. If someone wrote a comment on the wiki, it is generally signed with their username. That would look something like this: --Djonni (talk) 12:44, 21 October 2020 (UTC). By clicking the word (talk) on a signature at the end of a comment, you will be brought to that user’s talk page.

Article talk pages

Every article has a talk page where wiki users can discuss the article. If you have a major change that you would like to make to an article, or a question about something someone wrote, you can leave a note on the talk page. The talk page is accessed by clicking the Discussion tab that is on the top left of the page. It is next to the tab that says Page.

Signing your message

When you post a message on a talk page, you should always sign and date your posts by typing two dashes and then four tildes: -- ~~~~. This will let others know who posted the message. The code will automatically generate your username along with a link to your own user talk page and the time and date that you posted the message.

If you forgot to sign your name, you can always go back and edit your message to add your signature.

Starting a new topic

Once you have landed on a talk page you can read and respond to the discussions already there, or start a new one. To start a new discussion, you first create a new topic. You do this by clicking on the Add topic tab, found on the top of the page, to the right of the Read tab. You then name the new subject, write out your thoughts, and sign your comment by typing --~~~~. The signature will autofill your name and date on the comment so that others can see who wrote it, and when it was written. After you have finished writing and signing your comment, it is a good habit to click the Show preview button. This way you can see what your comment will look like when publishing it. When you are ready to put your comment up on the page, click the Save changes button.

Replying to a topic

To add a comment to an existing discussion, start by scrolling to the beginning of the discussion. Find the subject at the top of the discussion that you want to edit and click the [edit] button at the end of the subject header line. Once you are editing, scroll to the bottom of the text so you can add your comment at the end of the discussion. Type your comment, sign it by adding --~~~~ at the end, and preview it. Before publishing your comment, you should leave an edit summary. This is a short sentence describing what you did, such as “asked a question” or “responded with a new idea”. This is helpful for later on when someone is reading a list of edits and would like to know what happened without reading the full edit. When you are done you can click the Save changes button to publish your words of wisdom.

Indenting and Outdenting Messages

When replying to messages on a talk page, to keep it clear where each message starts, you must use indents and outdents. Each new message gets indented one level more than the previous message. After three or four levels of indent, the lines get difficult to read, so the next message gets an outdent, and the pattern restarts. To indent a message, add a colon : at the start of your message. Each colon represents one level of indentation. For example, if you want to reply to a non indented level message, you start your message by typing a colon :. To reply to a message which was indented one level, you will simply need to add another colon at the start of your message, like this ::.

Outdenting is used for when indentation gets too far in to be legible. The outdent will draw a line showing that the messages are continuing out to the first level again. This is done by using the {{Outdent}} template. To use the template, simply type {{outdent|::::}} The number of colons you type in the outdent template should be the same number of colons used in the last indented message. If the last message was indented four levels using four colons you need to type {{outdent|::::}}

Quoting someone

Sometimes, it is useful to quote part of a previous comment for added clarity. You can do this by using the {{Talk quote block}} and {{Talk quote inline}} templates. {{Talk quote block}} (short form: {{tqb}})) is used for longer blocks of quoted messages while {{Talk quote inline}} (short form: {{tqi}}) is used for short in-line quotes.

Another way to ensure clarity in messages is to mention to whom you are replying. This can be done by using the {{User link}} template. This template provides a way to link to a userpage and display just the username, like [[User:Example|Example]] which gives Example. This may not save much typing for a short username like "Example", but it may be more useful with long usernames such as [[User:Guywh0sitsbehindphilip12|Guywhositsbehindphilip12]] which gives Guywhositsbehindphilip12. For example, typing {{u|Example}} and {{u|Guywhositsbehindphilip12|Guy}} gives Example and Guy, respectively.

Notifying another user

Since the GodWiki only has a notification system for messages left on your own personal page, you must manually notify another user of your response to then if you wish them to know about it. The easiest way to do this is to use the {{Talkback}} template. This template help keep discussion participants up to date with conversations they are involved in.

When you use leave this template on another user's talk page, they will get a notification that they received a new message. They can then click the talkback link to see your comment.

Some examples for when to use this template:

  • If you receive a message from a user on your personal talk page, you can notify the user that you have responded to his/her message on your own talk page.
  • If you create a topic on your talk page, you can notify a user that the discussion might need his/her attention.
  • If you respond to a user's post on an article talk page with questions or information awaiting their response, you can inform the user that you have responded, and that the conversation is ready to move on.

To use this template to direct a user's attention to your talk page, simply type {{talkback|Your Username}} on their own talk page. Make sure to spell your username correctly with correct spaces and capitalization. This will generate the following message on their page:

To point to a page other than your own personal talk page, you must include the full talk page link. For example, if you want to point to a discussion on the Main Page, type {{Talkback|Talk:Main Page}} in the user's talk page. This will generate the following message on their page:

Be sure to accurately type the name of the page you wish them to visit. Capitalization makes a difference in the wiki. If you misspell or miscapitalize a title, the link will not generate properly.

You can also specify which section in the talk page you wish to direct a user's attention to by adding a # symbol followed by the section name that you want the link to jump to. For example, if you want to direct their attention to the Feedback on new Main Page section of the Main Page talk page, you can type {{Talkback|Talk:Main Page|Feedback on new Main Page}}. This will generate the following message on their page:

Getting a message on your own talk page

When you get a message on your own talk page, a notification will show up on the top part of the page. It will look like this:

The first link will take you to your own talk page where you can view the latest message(s) you received. The second link will take you to your Contributions page where you can see your latest edits.
