In a nutshell, "fishing" in Godville involves your hero using one item as "bait" but possibly picking up several other items. Usually, the hero will choose the most valuable item as "bait". This can be very frusterating for deities when activatable artifacts are in the inventory. For example, here's a screenshot of a hero using their deus ex machina as "bait" and getting a bag of lovely bones (as one of several items over time) in return:

It looks like a new kind of hobby is spreading through Godville. Nobody knows how it all started, but more and more heroes, from beginners to the most seasoned adventurers, are being spotted siting next to rivers, ponds and other water bodies, with an artifact attached to a line on a stick… They call it “fishing”.

If your hero has completed the [[ark]], they can also catch [[creatures]] to put in their [[ark]] in the hope of preserving some of Godville's wildlife in the event of a flood. Understandably, dragging a manimal or feminal from a lake creates quite a scene, and scares away the fish, so after catching a creature, the hero will stop fishing and go on their way.

Surprisingly, the loot is not just fish: it could be a golden brick or something else easily activatable. Taverns are already full of stories about a bigger catch fished out on a “bolder” bait. In the best ZPG tradition, divine influence is not required or it can even be harmful – nobody wants to scare away all the fish with noise or thunderclaps.

In the mean time, a few overly enthusiastic shipwrights got their hands on some ancient scriptures and realized why they needed arks in the first place. All this time they were meant to preserve life in this world – which in their heroic minds translates into finding a thousand pairs of twos of every kind and packing them into their arks, just in case.

However, there is a problem – heroes have gone and forth through Godville countless times and all they saw were some genderless and occasionally male creatures. Where do they find fenimals? Well, checking the waters worth a shot. While high-waters are not yet available due to the ongoing construction in the Godville’s port, a recent fishing craze should come in very handy.

Fishing is a popular hobby in Godville, which is little surprise, since it involves sitting by a river or pond, doing nothing other than holding a stick and drinking beer (with the chance of getting a free artifact in the process if they're lucky enough for their hook to snag one). For many heroes it is a welcome break from questing. While fishing, the hero can also regain health by eating the fish they caught.

If your hero has completed the ark, they can also catch creatures to put in their ark in the hope of preserving some of Godville's wildlife in the event of a flood. Understandably, dragging a manimal or feminal from a lake creates quite a scene, and scares away the fish, so after catching a creature, the hero will stop fishing and go on their way.

Fishing is a ZPG activity that can randomly occur while traveling - more commonly during a walk back to town. Performing influences during fishing will actually scare the fish and cancel your hero's fishing without any end reward.

Fishing Artifacts

Some artifacts are only gainable from fishing. Most notable are activatables which cost no godpower and either turn into 'rubbish' (a single non-bold artifact) or something useful (anywhere from 2-7 artifacts, sometimes including bold or activatable ones). These are only caught at the end of a fishing session. In addition some artifacts can be caught while fishing.

Fishing end rewards

Our heroes always like to go out with a bang and wouldn't settle with just a measly bag of bones. No, at the end of fishing they often get a special reward. Aside from the aforementioned fishing artifacts, the hero may also:

  • obtain a creature to shove into the ark (if the hero has one)
  • obtain a golden brick or log (for the temple or ark, respectively)
  • obtain some seaweed (restores health)
  • perform a prayer (restores godpower)
  • receive an encounter with a nasty fishing inspector (loss of ~500-700 gold or health)
  • catch an activatable from the list above
  • receive a random boss-monster-specific bold artifact
