This curious little device will take any collection of artifacts, thoughts, people, gold, odors, or anything else, and organize the collection into something-in-common sub-collections numbering 0, 1, 1, 2, 3, 5, 8, 13, 21, 34...

General Information

The Fibonacci sequencer is thought to be named for its inventor, an eccentric who lives in Vector Field. The device, itself, is a transparent box about the size of two heroic palms on an edge, and the interior is a profusion of gears, mechanical switches, springs, and balanced weights. While it works, the device makes a quiet sound variously described as "pa-chunk, pa-chunk" or "vi-vi-dow, vi-vi-dow."

To use the Fibonacci sequencer, set it in the middle of the collection to be organized, speak the name of the type of item to be organized, and tap it twice on the top panel. The device will first enter an "analysis" mode, where nothing appears to happen for up to one hour, but then individual pieces of the collection will begin to shift. For objects and people, this is observed as involuntary physical movement. For thoughts, this movement is reported to be a strange, tickling itch in the brain, followed by a growing mental clarity.

The device ceases to function either when a given collection no longer contains enough items to form the next sub-collection, or when the device is destroyed.


  • Do not activate the Fibonacci sequencer without defining what is to be sorted. It reverts to the largest collection available in the near area, which is usually the genes of the person that activated it. Needless to say, DNA is not supposed to be sequenced this way.
  • Do not activate the Fibonacci sequencer to influence the natural world. Some joker activated one of these devices in the desert outside of San Satanos and told it to sort sand; the machine has been at unceasing work since 202 g.e., and the sizes of the dunes it has formed around itself are now influencing weather patterns sufficiently to enlarge the desert. Pray for someone to manage to destroy the device before the dunes get large enough to create localized earthquakes.

Sales Tips

  • A hero may get paid by a merchant to destroy this device, since it is too powerful to be allowed to fall into the hands of the wrong people.
  • Bootleg versions of this device are easily detected by their use of the wrong sequences (1, 2, 3, 4... 2, 4, 16...), and merchants often keep collections of marbles to test for device authenticity prior to purchase. Theft of marble collections prior to an attempt to sell a suspected bootleg Fibonacci sequencer has proven to be a very successful tactic employed by evil heroes.
