Short text
— This is the author

Draft replacement for {{Quote}}, using HTML5 and flexbox instead of a table. Should have better rendering for mobiles (less dead whitespace), and be more flexible, as demonstrated with |form=, see below.

Parameters

The template takes one unnamed parameter containing the text of the quote. Note that if the quoted text contains an = equals sign, this will break the template. You can overcome this by naming the unnamed parameter. I.e.:

{{Quote|This=won't work}}

{{Quote|1=This=will work}}

If no text is provided, the template will give you Lorem Ipsum, and if an empty parameter is provided, the template will give you an empty quotation.

Content parameters

author
The author and, optionally, origin of the quotation.
cite
The name of the origin of the quotation, typically a book, publication, or website. In most browsers this will be rendered in italics. The contents of the cite parameter will also be added to the cite="..." property of the quotation.
initial or drop-cap
If desired, an enlarged initial letter can be displayed in initial or drop cap style. An initial letter shares the same baseline and as the line of text; a drop cap is an inset float with extra spacing which the text wraps around. These are common techniques in typesetting and illuminated manuscripts (see Wikipedia:Initial). Note that this is probably only going to look good if your text is several lines long. Examples: |initial=L; |drop-cap=J; |drop-cap=⁓

Style and formatting

form
The template currently supports 5 forms.
  • guillemets: The default, and traditional form of the template. This form is also called кавычки.
  • speech: Quotation marks more like those used in English typography. This form is also called 66-99.
  • 99-66: The reverse of the speech form, used extensively in eastern, central, and northern Europe, among other locations.
  • brackets: Traditional CJK-style square corner brackets. This form is also called cjk.
  • bare: No decorations in the bookends, just a simple block quote. Also called bare.
style
CSS style for the outer container. Allows setting of borders, backgrounds, etc. Font styles applied here will alter both the quote text and the attribution text.
quote-style
CSS style for the quote.
author-style
CSS style for the author area.
initial-style
CSS style for the initial character.
drop-cap-style
CSS style for the drop cap character. Note that inital and drop cap are mutually exclusive.
align
The horizontal alignment of the quotation, left, center or right. Default is center. Note:
max-width
The maximum width of the quote. Default is 60rem. For full-width quote no matter how wide the viewing screen is, set |max-width=100%, but be aware this can look strange on desktop displays.
