Godville’s seas contain many types of beasties to whom arks are a delicious snack.

Beasties are terrifying sea monsters that inhabit the depths of Godville's oceans. These denizens of the deep are known to feast upon any ship that dares come near, and some are even known to hunt down any nearby prey that wanders into their sight.

Landbound heroes don't have to worry about these creatures, but once the hero completes his ark and decides to go sailing, he soon discovers that the sea is swarming with these monsters. Like their land counterparts, a beastie often has loot, be it in the form of fresh water supplies, healing oil, a hint pointing to the nearest treasure, or even the treasure itself. Some beasties even have fenimals in their bellies or on their backs, which will prove useful to any hero trying to preserve the wildlife of Godville.

However, getting the loot is not so easy. Beasties are nimble animals, and may sometimes attack the hero before divine influence can reach the sea, an ability that can prove fatal to a hero if his ark is badly damaged already.

Unique characteristics

  • Biologists have noted that all beasties discovered so far have been female.[1] It is not known whether male beasties choose to cavort in a different sea, or if beasties are universally female.[2] It is unlikely we will ever know for sure, as most researchers who try to study beasties are eaten.
  • Beasties come in two varieties: single-named (Mermelly) and double-named (Traffic Siren). Single-named beasties are weaker, and may or may not provide a benefit when defeated. Double-named beasties are more powerful (and therefore more dangerous to engage), but they are also more valuable when defeated, as they always carry items of great worth: namely a fenimal and treasure.[3] Note that all double-named beasties have a space between their two names (for example, Bloodcurdling Whale). If the beastie's name contains two words that are connected by a hyphen, it's considered to be a single name.[4]
  • While most beasties are stationary and prefer to stay in one spot forever[5], a few exhibit nomadic tendencies that have given them the name of roaming beastie[6]. Roaming beasties have no fixed position, but move back and forth at will. They may appear suddenly to pounce on an unsuspecting ark. On the plus side, it is usually easier to pull away from a roaming beastie than from a stationary one.

Benefits of beasties

The hero who defeats a single-named beastie may receive either:

  • Some supplies (usually fresh water, sometimes fresh ice reserves, otherwise unspecified "supplies");
  • A hint, in the form of (a) a triad of hints of the same colour – one of which will be booty, (b) a directional arrow pointing in the direction of treasure, (c) a general hint showing the maximum radius of the treasure’s location, or (d) a hot/cold hint;
  • An ark repair (such as: "Mockerel bursts, spattering the surroundings with her healing fish oil"), or
  • Nothing at all.

The hero who defeats a double-named beastie will receive:

  • A fenimal.
  • Treasure.

Although every fenimal is accompanied by treasure, the fenimal occupies only a single slot in the hero's ark. The treasure appears only when the hero returns to Godville at the conclusion of the sail.

The enterprising hero must collect 1,000 pairs of both types of creature – fenimals and manimals[7] – as a prerequisite to opening their lab. To create a lab boss, he must then accumulate an additional 100 pairs. Therefore, players continue to accumulate manimals and fenimals even after the first thousand pairs have been obtained.[8]

Understanding beastie strength

Each single-named beastie possesses one of 4 levels of strength, with the weakest being ‘1’ (representing a value in the range of 10-19 health points, or “HP”) and the strongest being ‘4’ (40-49 HP).

Double-named beasties are always ‘5’ (meaning “50 or more”), and are therefore significantly more powerful than the strongest of the single-named beasties. Many an ark has been sunk by a vicious double-named beastie!

As with dungeons (where the treasure boss is located far from the entrance), the most powerful beasties are found the further from port you go. Single-named beasties are likely to be found almost anywhere on the map, but they tend to be stronger in the outer rings. Double-named ones are invariably found in the outermost ring, far from port. They also like to hang out in reef clusters, so as to weaken the unwary sailor.

To date, the strongest beastie encountered was a double-named beastie with 64 HP (Sea Harpoonia) fought by GodCham Almighty . If you encounter a beastie with higher HP, please update this information.

Tips on fighting a beastie

  • Beasties love to lurk in reef clusters, so the savvy hero avoids any surrounding reefs as much as possible. Try to avoid being on a reef when you fight the beastie! If that means spending extra time and godpower navigating so that you can approach the beastie from a direction that is less reefy, do it.
  • When you fight a roaming beastie, try to begin the fight when it moves onto a cell containing a reef. It cannot move from that cell for the duration of the fight, and the reef will help you by sapping your opponent’s strength on every turn.
  • Punishing during a fight tends to defeat the beastie more quickly – although, as elsewhere in Godville, the punish can occasionally backfire on you too, or have no effect at all.
  • If you don’t want to fight the beastie, you can try to navigate away from it. Once you’ve engaged with it, however, pulling away is easier said than done. However, you may succeed if you persist.[9]
  • A defeated single-named beastie will often yield up supplies. This can be useful when your ark is running out of food, there are no supply islands anywhere in the vicinity, and you are unable (or unwilling) to spend godpower on punishes in an effort to restock. However, it is best not to count on this, as “often” does not equal “always”.
  • While single-named beasties can be considered strategically optional, it’s desirable to engage with any double-named beastie you find (if your ark’s resources allow it) because this type always yields booty in the form of a feminal who carries treasure (see next section).
  • Godville’s browser view provides some advantages to the would-be slayer of beasties who is willing to use a computer rather than a mobile device. Double-beastie names are always bolded for extra emphasis, making it easier to spot their first appearance in the sailing chronicle. All beastie names are displayed with dots (…) underneath, indicating the presence of tiptext. To learn the level of a beastie anywhere on the map, hover the cursor over its name and the tiptext displays its starting strength in HP. (When your hero is in a fight, the beastie’s declining health displays on the main screen, but the tiptext information – representing the strength it had at the beginning – remains unchanged.)

Notes and References

  1. Judging from both their (very feminine) names and the consistently gendered language found in the sailing chronicles, e.g. “Peelinda drew herself onto the map.”
  2. Some Godvillian philosophers argue that there may be an alt-Godville (or "Russian Godville") in which sea monsters are male, but since no one knows how to locate this alt-universe, this is purely speculation.
  3. In the sailing environment, the male creatures known as manimals are landlubbers who are always found on islands, while fenimals are seagoing creatures who appear to enjoy the company of double-named beasties. Once the sail is over, fenimals are usually found to be carrying gold that the hero, of course, gets to keep.
  4. Ninja-starfish is the sole example (so far) of a single-named beastie with a single name that is double-barreled (two elements connected by a hyphen).
  5. Or for the duration of the sail, at least. Do they go off and party afterwards? Only sweet heaven knows.
  6. Not to be confused with the Romani bestia or Roman Beastie, a legendary creature of antiquity whose existence has never been confirmed.
  7. As manimals are a species of creature that dislikes water, they can be obtained only from certain islands, never from beasties.
  8. As an interesting sidebar, when a player has got 1,000 of one creature but not the other – let’s say he has accumulated 1,000 manimals but only 900 fenimals -- any “surplus” creatures (manimals in this case) will not be taken into the ark until the initial 1,000 pairs have been completed. Instead, the surplus creature will transform into treasure. It is thought that the treasure is probably augmented as a result (for example, if the treasure contains gold, it may be “more” gold than a god without pairs would have received upon capturing the same creature), but this cannot be verified.
  9. Or not.
